EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern fell behind early to Penn State and could not come all the way back, falling to the Nittany Lions, 6-3, Friday afternoon at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex.

PSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals in the 12th and 18th minutes.

Junior Ellen Schlafly (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) cut the lead in half for Northwestern (7-9, 1-4 Big Ten) in the 32nd minute, pushing the ball in during a scramble in front of the cage.

Penn State came right back, scoring a third goal just 28 seconds before the half to take a 3-1 lead into the break.

The score could have been much worse with the Nittany Lions taking 14 shots in the half to NU's three, but Wildcat starting keeper Kelly Augustine (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) made seven saves to keep NU close.

PSU (9-7, 3-2 Big Ten) scored again four minutes into the second half to pull out to a 4-1 lead, but NU did not give up. In the 40th minute sophomore Meghan Small (Macungie, Pa./Moravian Academy) took a pass up the middle from senior Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and dove to push the ball past a charging goalkeeper and make the score 4-2.

With the assist, Cooper extends her scoring streak to six consecutive matches.

Penn State would put the match out of reach, however, scoring two more goals in the 57th and 58th minutes on substitute goalkeeper Sherri-Anne Nyberg (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna Secondary) to take a 6-2 advantage.

Sophomore Wenny Ng (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) caged an unassisted goal in the 65th minute to make the final score 6-3.

Northwestern returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday, celebrating Senior Day in its final regular season home match against No. 3 Duke.
