
NU Women Place Eighth at NCAA Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Northwestern placed eighth among women and 15th overall at the 2003 NCAA Championships, hosted by Air Force. Sophomore Julia F?ldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istavan Gimnazium) led the attack with her 10th-place finish in foil, securing honorable mention All-America honors.
F?ldi led the 'Cats with 15 wins on the weekend, just one less than she had at last year's championships. Her 191 career foil wins are the 12th most in NU history.
Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) paced the freshmen representatives, finishing 14th in ep?e. Sullivan's 11 wins on the weekend gave her 96 for her debut season. Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and Christina Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Castilleja) each placed 20th. Pasternak garnered seven wins in the sabre draw and Wang picked up five in foil.
"Our kids fenced pretty well," said NU head coach Laurie Schiller. "To finish eighth among the other women's teams in the country with three freshmen is pretty good. We're very satisfied with the outcome."
Notre Dame took home the combined title, while Penn State racked up the most women's points with 97. NU finished with 38 points.
