BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Northwestern fell to Indiana on Saturday night in three games by the scores of 31-33, 33-35, 25-30. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 17-13, 8-10 Big Ten heading into the final regular season weekend. NU hosts Michigan State and Michigan next Friday and Saturday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
"We expected Indiana to play well," said head coach Keylor Chan. "Every team is going to strive to play well at home, and they are in a position of having nothing to lose going into every match."
The 'Cats actually led the Hoosiers in most major categories, holding an advantage in hitting percentage, set assists, digs, and overall points. But Northwestern wasn't able to gain the momentum and Indiana pulled off the win on NU unforced errors.
Leah Delcourt (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) and Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) led the Wildcats, with Delcourt going 6-10 with zero errors. The .600 attack percent set a new single-game record for the junior. Lange was 16-27 (.444).
Northwestern will host the last Big Ten games of 2003 next weekend when Michigan State and Michigan visit Evanston. It will also be the last opportunity to see seniors Erica Knavel (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East), Erika Lange and Iwona Lodzik (Tarnobrzeg, Poland/Tarnobzeg) compete at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
"I'm thankful that we're at home next weekend," said Chan. "But that doesn't mean we'll have it easy. Michigan and Michigan State are gunning for conference wins too as we're all on the same mission--getting an NCAA tourney berth."
