EVANSTON, Ill. - On a day of "lasts" the Northwestern field hockey team came up with a first. While, head coach Marisa Didio, who will retire at the end of the season, and seniors Diane Provencher, Suzi Sutton and Katie Walshauser all participated in their last game on the NU campus, the 'Cats put together back-to-back shutouts for the first time all season, blanking Syracuse 2-0.

Not only did the Wildcats hold the Orangewomen scoreless, they held them shotless as well.

Syracuse appeared to be playing on the downside of a slanted field all match, rarely pushing the ball past the midfield line. When the Orangewomen did manage to get into NU territory, they usually did not stay long.

The 'Cats, meanwhile, took advantage of an opportunitstic offensive effort.

Walshauser put the 'Cats on board in the first half when she took a pass from Ellen Schlafly and beat Syracuse goalkeeper Besty Wagner with a shot at 31:35 to give Northwestern a 1-0 lead. Candice Cooper was also credited with an assist on the play.

Christine Nannicelli, who racked up five points in the Wildcats' 7-0 win over Saint Louis, scored at 55:58 when she took a pass from Holly Palin and put the ball in the net, to extend the lead to 2-0.

NU finished the regular season 9-8 overall with a conference mark of 1-5, good enough for sixth place in the Big Ten. They will face the No. 3 seed on Friday in the first day of the Big Ten Tournament. The opponent and time of the game is TBA.
