EVANSTON, Ill. - A game advertised as an exhibition -- or in soccer terms, a "friendly" -- was hardly that, as the Northwestern men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought battle with the University of Loyola-Chicago. The match saw two players sent off with red cards and another three given yellow cards.
Northwestern dropped two scoring chances late in the second half that would have tied the match, as one shot hit the top of the goal and another just missed the left post.
Freshman Ian Herrick (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) provided the Wildcats' lone goal, scoring a header in the 24th minute on a crossing pass by sophomore Steven Jedlinski (Palatine, Ill./Fremd).
Loyola started the scoring in the 12th minute when Chris Gradilla redirected a shot by Matt Klacko. The Ramblers' second goal came when C.J. Bachman's cross was headed home by Nico Tricoci for what turned out to be the gamewinner.
NEXT NORTHWESTERN MATCH: Friday, Sept. 1 @ Eastern Illinois -- 4 p.m.
