Wrestling Team Finishes Sixth at Big Ten Championships

EVANSTON,Ill. - The Northwestern wrestling team finished the Big Ten Wrestling Championships in sixth place as senior Mark Bybee (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) became conference champion at 174 pounds. Bybee defeated Gabe McMahan of Iowa, 9-2, to take home the individual title. Top-ranked Scott Schatzman (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) was defeated by Doug Schwab (Iowa), 5-2, in the championship match at 141 pounds.
Four other NU wrestlers placed as the Cats compiled 51 team points over the weekend. Sophomore John Giacche (Flemington, N.J./Blair Academy) was decisioned by Scott Moore of Penn State and placed eighth at 133 pounds. In the 184 pound division, Tom Ciezki (Evergreen Park, Ill./St. Laurence) pinned Donovan True (Ohio State) in 2:14 to place fifth. Matt Huebner (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) defeated Lee Weber of Iowa, 7-5, in overtime to place him seventh. At heavyweight, Josh Saul (Corona Del Mar, Calif./Calvary Chapel) was defeated by Jake Vercelli of Purdue, 3-2, to place eighth.
Schatzman, Bybee, Ciezki and Huebner will all represent the Wildcats at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, Mo. on March 16-18. Any wrestler placing in the top seven at the Big Ten Championships automatically qualifies for the NCAAs.
