Wrestlers Fifth After Day One of Big Ten Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern wrestling team stands in fifth place after one day at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships held in West Lafayette, Ind. Seniors Scott Schatzman (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) and Mark Bybee (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) advanced to tomorrow's finals at 141 and 174 pounds, respectively.
Schatzman, ranked No. 1 in the nation at 141, tech. falled James Torres (Indiana), 20-4 in the first round, and won by decision over Grant Hoerr (Wisconsin, 2-0), and Damion Logan (Michigan, 4-3) to reach the finals.
Tenth-ranked Bybee decisioned both of his opponents by scores of 7-2 over William Hill (Michigan State) and 4-3 over Kole Clauson (Wisconsin) to reach championship finals.
