EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern University men's soccer team fell to Michigan State Sunday afternoon, 6-2, in East Lansing. The Wildcats fell to 0-8 on the season (0-2 Big Ten), while MSU improved to 5-4.
The Spartans scored twice in the first half, getting an unassisted goal from Craig Hearn in the 34th minute and the first of two Nick DeGraw goals with just 1:47 left before halftime. MSU then tacked on two more within a minute of each other in the 52nd minute to up the lead to 4-0 before Northwestern finally responded with a goal from Matt Miclea.
Michigan State scored two more goals, in the 70th and 81st minutes, before Brandon Swalve notched an unassisted tally in the 85th minute to close the scoring.
Michigan State outshot Northwestern, 25-8, forcing Wildcat goalkeeper Chris Berlin to make seven saves. For the Spartans, T.J. Lieckfelt played the first 56 minutes and made one save before giving way to Mike Robinson.
Northwestern is back in action Tuesday night, meeting Notre Dame in South Bend. Kickoff will be 7 p.m.
