Northwestern Wrestlers Fall In Big Ten Opener

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern wrestling team opened its Big Ten season in Ann Arbor, Mich., Friday night and fell to the Wolverines, 24-15.
Scott Schatzman (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central), the fifth-ranked wrestler in the country at 141 lbs., led the Wildcat charge and stayed undefeated in dual meets (10-0) by defeating seventh-ranked Damion Logan, 6-4, in overtime. Schatzman improved his overall record in 1999-2000 to 19-2.
Senior Mark Bybee (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence), No. 7 in the country at 174, defeated Charles Martelli by pinning him at 4:12 in the second round. Bybee upped his dual record to 8-2 and his overall mark to 14-5.
John Giacche (Flemington, N.J./Blair Academy) defeated Matt Michalski, 6-5, at 133 lbs. and Drew Pariano (Fairview Park, Ohio/Fairview Park) defeated Tony Holifield, 4-0, at 157 lbs. for the Wildcats' other victories.
The Wildcats are scheduled to be back in action on Sunday, serving as the home team in dual meets with Missouri and Marquette. The meets will take place at Marion Central H.S. (Woodstock, Ill.) at 2 p.m.
Northwestern wrestling, NuWave Productions and Fox Sports Net Chicago have teamed up to bring the grapplers to the TV screen. The 'Cats can be seen Monday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. when the Missouri/Marquette duals will be televised.
