Sean Cha is set to begin his fourth season as Assistant Director of Basketball Operations & Video Coordinator with the Northwestern University women's basketball program in 2025-26. During his time with the 'Cats, Cha, a two-time Northwestern graduate who was elevated to a member of the coaching staff prior to the 2023-24 season, has restructured the program's focus on analytics and data management.
Cha analyzes key statistical metrics, including play efficiency, lineup effectiveness, and individual performance to assist in informed coaching decisions and strategic planning. Through the use of scripting, he designs Hudl Sportscode output windows to provide video evidence in the monitoring of team and individual performance. Cha also utilizes Python, R, and HTML to manipulate and present data.
On the court, Cha leads skill workouts, placing a special focus on on IQ and game-like decision making. He also directly assists in practice planning and execution, along with leading the program's practice players and scout team to help in preparation for upcoming games.
Cha joined the 'Cats as a student manager and practice player during his undergraduate career ahead of serving as a graduate assistant during the 2021-22 season. During his time in the latter position, Cha was responsible for live cutting film during games and breaking down scout game film. He also oversaw the team's undergraduate managers, served on the scout team, assisted in travel arrangements, and managed food orders for the team.
Cha received a bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 2021 from Northwestern before completing his master's in Sports Administration in 2022. He is currently pursuing a graduate certificate in Modeling & Analytics in Northwestern's Master's in Data Science program.
