OJAI, Calif. - Tenth-seeded Northwestern women's tennis (13-13, 6-7 Big Ten) fell to the No. 7 seed Illinois Fighting Illini (14-11, 8-5 Big Ten) by a final score of 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Ojai, Calif., concluding their Big Ten Tournament run in the first round.
Illinois, ranked No. 42 nationally, opened the match by claiming the doubles point with victories at the No. 3 and No. 1 positions. Between the two Illini wins, Northwestern first-years Mika Dagan Fruchtman and Erica Jessel teamed up for a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot. It was the second straight win for the duo, who also picked up a doubles victory in the regular-season finale at Indiana over the weekend.
In singles play, the Illini continued to control the match. They took first sets on five of six courts, with Britany Lau claiming Northwestern's only first-set victory. Action on court one wrapped up first, with Illinois increasing their lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 win.
Neena Feldman and Sydney Pratt both bounced back in their second sets for the 'Cats; both players won 6-1 to even up their matches at one set all. Neither got the chance to complete the comeback, however, as the Illini finished off the 4-0 sweep with straight-set victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots to advance on in tournament action.
