EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 39 Northwestern women's tennis (10-8, 3-3 Big Ten) wrapped up its weekend with a decisive 4-0 sweep of Oregon (7-8, 0-6 Big Ten) on Monday at Combe Tennis Center. The win made it an even weekend for the 'Cats, who fell 4-1 to No. 20 Washington (12-2, 5-1 Big Ten) on Saturday afternoon.
Monday's match featured back-and-forth doubles play to open the action. Sydney Pratt and Erica Jessel won 6-3 at the No. 1 position to get things started, but both of the other two courts ended much more tightly contested. Kiley Rabjohns and Britany Lau eventually provided the deciding victory at No. 3 doubles, winning 7-5 to secure the 'Cats' first lead.
In singles action, the 'Cats were in control from start to finish. Northwestern won first sets on five of six courts, including a 6-0 set one victory for Neena Feldman at the No. 5 spot. With a second set that was nearly as dominant, 6-1, Feldman put the 'Cats up 2-0 in the match overall.
Pratt was next to finish, continuing her flawless singles season with a 6-3, 6-0 win at the No. 4 spot. She is now 12-0 this dual season individually.
Finally, Lau put the match away for good with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles - just the second victory of her career when playing in the top third of Northwestern's lineup.
The victory over Oregon was the second 4-0 sweep in Big Ten play for the 'Cats, who also won 4-0 against Nebraska last weekend at home. After Saturday's loss to the No. 20 Huskies, Monday's win brought Northwestern back to even in conference action, at 3-3, after three weekends of play.
Despite the loss on Saturday, the match against Washington was highlighted for the 'Cats by a ranked takedown at No. 1 singles, where first-year Jessel defeated the ITA's No. 84 singles player, Reece Carter, 6-0, 6-1. It was the first victory over a ranked opponent of Jessel's career, as well as her first individual win in conference action. Jessel's win provided Northwestern's sole point in Washington's 4-1 victory.
Next up for Northwestern is a trip east, as the Wildcats prepare to take on both Michigan State and Michigan next weekend on the road. Northwestern visits the Spartans on Friday for a 4 p.m. CT match in East Lansing, then heads to Ann Arbor for a meeting with the top-ten-ranked Wolverines on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CT.
