EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern Athletics and its Kabiller NU for Life Program hosted the 11th annual First Year Foundations event to welcome our newest 'Cats to the NU for Life family. First-year student-athletes gained insight into the vast career and professional development support and resources available to them.
The NU For Life Advisory Group, led by upper-class student-athletes, facilitated the first-year program in January, providing an in-depth look into Kabiller NU for Life's support system and resources. As part of this, first-years immersed themselves in interactive professional development sessions on various topics, ranging from networking, major/career exploration, and developing a LinkedIn professional presence – including professional headshots.
"The First-Year Foundations event was great to be a part of this year," said Deepti Choudhury, an Executive Board Member and senior on the Cross Country team. "As a cohort lead for the Kabiller NU for Life program, I love seeing the first-years begin engaging with all of the awesome career development resources we have as student-athletes. It's exciting to have the opportunity to engage with the first-years and learn about their experiences so far at Northwestern and talk through how the Kabiller NU for Life program can fit into their time here. We always have a great time putting the event together with the whole Invest NU team, and this year was no different."
The night wrapped up with a roundtable discussion, allowing first-years to learn from their upper class peers about all available resources, such as mentorship, one-on-one career consulting, informational interviews, access to alumni networks, internships, and job opportunities.
"Participating in the First-Year Foundation event helped orient me to the professional world - from refining my LinkedIn with quality connections and a professional headshot to exploring leadership opportunities within athletics," said Vincent Yang, a first-year student-athlete on the Men's Tennis team. "The event also provided valuable insight into the different paths after Northwestern and how to prepare for what comes next."
