EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern wrestling (4-6, 2-5 Big Ten) made it back-to-back wins in Big Ten action with a 27-11 victory over Wisconsin (5-11, 1-7 Big Ten) on Senior Night at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Seven 'Cats picked up victories in the regular season home finale.
Jon Halvorsen was the first Wildcat to reach the win column, taking home his second straight victory in overtime at 184 lbs. After Halvorsen and opponent Dylan Russo traded escapes during regulation, the match entered overtime tied 1-1. Halvorsen wasted no time from there, taking Russo down less than 20 seconds into the sudden victory period to secure the 4-1 win and tie to teams at three points apiece.
Next up, No. 14 Evan Bates put the 'Cats on top with his eleventh bonus-point victory of the season. Facing off with Wyatt Ingham in the 197-lbs match, Bates was the first on the board with a takedown halfway through the first period. He added on to his lead in the second with another takedown, then stretched it even further with four near-fall points. Starting the third period on the bottom, Bates quickly put the match away with an opening reversal, then a final takedown with 50 seconds still on the clock in the third. The 16-1 technical fall extended Bates' winning streak to three matches and improved him to 4-3 in conference action.
Dirk Morley kept things rolling for Northwestern in a thrilling heavyweight bout that saw him erase a 9-2 deficit against Wisconsin's Gannon Rosenfeld. After Rosenfeld racked up three early takedowns, Morley struck back with one of his own near the end of the first period. Entering the second trailing 9-6, Morley kept pace through the next two minutes, trading takedowns and escapes with Rosenfeld to keep the match close. Then, with just 30 seconds left in the bout, Morley knotted things up with a third and final takedown that evened the score at 14 apiece. The riding time point - which Morley secured with just four seconds to spare - proved the difference as Northwestern's 285-pounder picked up his second victory of dual season.
After Wisconsin's ranked wrestlers at 125 and 133 lbs each picked up wins to even the team score, Chris Cannon put Northwestern on top for good with a win at 141 lbs. Cannon used takedowns in the first and third periods and a pair of escapes to outlast his opponent and win his second straight Big Ten bout by 8-2 decision.
He was followed by No. 25 Sam Cartella, who won his team-leading sixth Big Ten dual match at 149 lbs. Cartella racked up ten near-fall points in the first period alone, earning a 13-point lead after the first three minutes. It took just one more period for him to secure the technical fall - his first since the Midlands Championships - with four final near-fall points, winning by a final score of 17-0. The shutout was Cartella's ninth of the 2024-25 season.
No. 9 Trevor Chumbley provided the clincher for Northwestern with an 11-2 major decision at 157 lbs. Using a takedown in each period, an escape and the riding point, Chumbley improved to 4-1 in conference dual matches with his third straight win.
With the match already decided, No. 18 Maxx Mayfield added the exclamation point on his Senior Night, bagging his team-leading 13th bonus-point victory with a 15-5 major decision. Mayfield's three third-period takedowns secured the major over Cody Goebel, locking in the 27-11 team victory for Northwestern.
The Wildcats will wrap up their regular season this Sunday, as they visit the No. 3 Iowa Hawkeyes in the dual season finale. Action from Iowa City is set to begin at 1 p.m. CT on B1G+.
