‘Cats Post Six Top 10 Marks In Indoor Opener At UW Preview

Northwestern tallies seven new personal bests across two-day meet
SEATTLE, Wash. (January 18, 2025) – Northwestern cross country opened the indoor track portion of its 2024-25 schedule in style, registering six new additions to the program's top 10 record boards at the UW Preview in Seattle, Wash.

Holly Smith got the 'Cats off to a flying start on Friday night in the 3,000m run. Smith shaved just shy of eight seconds off her previous top effort in the event, running 9:20.32, the fourth fastest time in program history, on the way to a seventh-place finish.
The pairing of Skye Ellis and Chloe Wellings came in just seconds back of Smith on the final 3,000m run leaderboard, each posting new personal bests of their own. Ellis ran 9:21.85 to finish 12th and move to fifth all-time in Wildcat annals, while Wellings climbed to sixth all-time at Northwestern with an effort of 9:22.65 that saw her claim 14th.
Northwestern carried its success from Friday into Saturday's mile run heats, as all four Wildcats who competed shattered their previous personal bests in the event. Ellis, out of Jan Juc, Australia, led the charge, crossing in 4:44.65 to finish 19th overall and ascend to fourth all-time at Northwestern.
Smith and Wellings were separated by just over a second on the final event leaderboard, as both joined Ellis in moving into the Wildcats' all-time top 10. Smith clocked in with a time of 4:48.48 (28th) that ranks as the sixth fastest showing in program history. Wellings was hot on her heels, surging through in 4:49.76 (32nd) to move just back of Smith into seventh all-time. Anna Hightower rounded out Northwestern's quartet competing in the event, battling across in a personal-best 4:57.01 (44th).
Northwestern returns to the track in just under two weeks at the Midwest Classic, January 31 - February 1, in Indianapolis, Ind.
