SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (May 2, 2024) – Powered by podium showings from its sabre squad and Ava Wade-Currie, Northwestern fencing had a successful stay in Salt Lake City, Utah at USA Fencing's April North American Cup (NAC).
Competing in the Division I Women's Team Sabre competition, the trio of Megumi Oishi, Adele Bois, and Amy Lu secured the Wildcats' second bronze medal in the event in as many years after toppling the Fencing Academy of Denver, 45-38.
Individually, the Wildcats came away with six top-25 finishes. Leading the way for that group was Wade-Currie, who closed out an outstanding first-year campaign by placing eighth overall in the Junior Women's Epee. After picking up three wins during pool action, the Hyde Park, Mass. native scored four victories in the tableau, a run highlighted by a 15-12 upset of seventh-seeded Alexandra Rakhovski.
Competing in the Junior Women's Sabre, Alex Chen capped off a standout debut season of her own, taking 17th. Chen enjoyed an unblemished run through pool play, going 6-0, ahead of a 15-7 win over Heartlyn Tabangay in the tableau.
A pair of 'Cats battled inside the top 25 in the Division I Women's Sabre, with Sky Miller and Oishi placing 20th and 24th, respectively. Both members of the duo finished pool bouts with 5-1 marks before each coming away with a win in head-to-head action.
