Five Wildcats post new personal bests at meet
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 30, 2024) – Ava Earl rocketed to the top of the program record board in the 5,000m run as Northwestern cross country opened the outdoor portion of its 2023-24 schedule on Friday evening at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.
Earl was outstanding as she saw action in the final heat of the 5,000m run at the Paul Derr Track. Out of Girdwood, Alaska, Earl placed eighth overall with a time of 15:46.51 to top former Wildcat great Rachel McCardell's previous school record. Earl's time marks a 33-second improvement from her personal best in the event and unofficially leads the NCAA West Region.
The pairing of Katherine Hessler and Maddy Whitman joined Earl in putting up new personal bests in heat four of the event. Hessler checked in at 16:45.44, placing fifth in the section, while Whitman took ninth at 16:55.77.
Kalea Bartolotto and Fiona Lenth dazzled in the 10,000m run to close out the Wildcats' stay in The Tar Heel State. Competing in the invitational portion of the event, Bartolotto came tantalizingly close to taking down the school record, falling just four tenths of a second shy as she posted a 27-second personal best of 33:52.71. Lenth turned in an impressive effort of her own shortly after, crossing in 35:12.02, a 52-second improvement off her previous top effort.
Competing closer to home at the Redbird Challenge in Normal, Ill. on Saturday afternoon, Jackie Holman led the way for the 'Cats in the 5,000m run. Holman surged across in 17:03.89 to top the event leaderboard, pacing a group of four Wildcats to finish inside the top eight that also included Emily Casaclang (5th; 17:35.04), Maddy Powers (6th; 18:06.53), and Audrey Bannister (8th; 18:36.79).
Northwestern returns to action on Saturday, April 13 when it heads downstate to Champaign, Ill. for the Gary Wieneke Memorial.
