LAKE CHARLES, La. – Northwestern fell 6-3 at McNeese in the series finale on Sunday, March 24.
The Wildcats got on the board first, taking a 1-0 advantage when Bennett Markinson reached on an error, scoring Owen McElfatrick.
Both starting pitchers locked it down for the next four innings, with the 'Cats taking a 1-0 edge into the bottom of the fifth. The Cowboys responded on a bunt single and throwing error, taking a 2-1 lead.In the top of the seventh, Markinson drove in the second run of the game for the Wildcats, bringing Bianchina on a base hit to center field, tying the game at two apiece.
McNeese retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four runs on three hits and an error to take a 6-2 advantage into the final frame. Northwestern got one back in the ninth but fell 6-3 to drop the series.
Luke Benneche allowed two runs, one earned on six hits and one walk in 5 1/3 innings of work, recording two punchouts.
Garrett Shearer (1-4) was handed the loss for the 'Cats, allowing four runs on two hits, striking out three in 1 2/3 innings.
JT Moeller (2-1) earned the win for the Cowboys, closing out the final 1 2/3 innings.
NU returns home for a midweek contest against Northern Illinois at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park on Tuesday, March 26 at 3:30 p.m. CT on B1G+.
