LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Evan Bates wrestled his way to a runner-up finish at 197 lbs at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday, headlining a group of nine 'Cats who competed in the event over the weekend at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

After advancing through the round of 16 by medical forfeit, No. 24 Bates was faced with No. 11 Zach Glazier (SDSU) in Friday night's quarterfinal. Bates got off to a hot start, using a pair of early takedowns to earn a 6-1 lead by the end of the first period before adding an escape and the riding time point to secure an 8-2 decision and advance on to Saturday's semifinal. Another medical forfeit put him through to the final, where he eventually fell at the hands of No. 2 Jacob Cardenes (MICH) and completed his weekend second on the podium.

Bates is the 18th Wildcat to earn a podium finish at the CKLV Invitational since Head Coach Matt Storniolo took over the program in 2016.

While missing out on podium places, Dedrick Navarro, Sam Cartella, Maxx Mayfield and Jon Halvorsen each picked up a pair of wins on Friday. At 125 lbs, Navarro posted a dominant 18-1 technical fall in consolation action, then followed it up with a victory by fall just 45 seconds into his next match. Mayfield picked up two wins by technical fall, 18-2 and 18-3, at 165 lbs, while Halvorsen downed a ranked opponent in No. 25 Ross McFarland (Hofstra) by 4-2 decision to highlight his weekend at 184 lbs.
