Wang, Shearer Impress As ‘Cats Win Six At Western Invitational

Northwestern back in action at November NAC this weekend
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (November 6, 2024) – Karen Wang and Natalie Shearer both put together undefeated outings as No. 5 Northwestern fencing came away with six victories at the Western Invitational over the weekend in San Diego, Calif.
Northwestern started fast at the SolCity Sports Center on Saturday, rolling to a 20-7 win over Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) rival No. 5 Ohio State, an effort highlighted by 8-1 showings from both its epee and sabre squads. The 'Cats followed up their win over the Buckeyes with comfortable victories against Tufts, 22-5, and Incarnate Word, 23-4, respectively.
After dropping a razor-thin 14-13 decision to No. 1 Harvard, Northwestern rounded out the opening day of competition with a 15-12 win over event host UC San Diego.
Sunday's final day of competition saw the Wildcats come away with a pair of additional dual victories. Northwestern rebounded from a 17-10 setback to Stanford with a 24-3 win against Brandeis before wrapping up its stay on the West Coast with a 20-7 triumph over Air Force.
Led by a spotless 12-0 showing by Wang, Northwestern's epee finished the weekend with an impressive 7-1 mark. Shearer, who made her dual debut, posted a perfect 10-0 record as the Wildcat sabreists went 6-2, a mark that was also matched by epee foil crew.
