COLUMBUS, Ohio - Northwestern women's tennis put in a solid performance at the ITA Midwest Regional in Columbus over the weekend, headlined by a semifinals appearance from the doubles duo of Britany Lau and Mika Dagan Fruchtman.
After a first-round bye, Lau and Dagan Fruchtman downed a trio of conference foes en route to the semifinal. They dispatched Ohio State's Chavez and Cau by a score of 8-7 (7-5) in the round of 32, then downed Illini Heuser and Xu 8-3 in the round of 16. Their final victory came over Bruno and Sheinin from Michigan in the quarterfinals, before they eventually fell to another Michigan duo in three sets to narrowly miss out on a finals appearance.
Lau and Dagan Fruchtman were joined in the quarterfinal by Katya Shepherd Johnson and Kiley Rabjohns, who also put together an impressive run of doubles victories. That pairing blanked their opponents in the round of 64 and came out on top of a closely contested 8-7 (7-5) victory against Notre Dame's Castedo and Hanford in the round of 32. They beat conference foes Cataldi and Rangan from Wisconsin in another tight 8-7 victory, then met their match in the quarterfinals against Miller and Fleigner of Michigan.
In singles action, the 'Cats started out hot with three of their four qualifiers progressing to main draw action on Thursday. On Friday, seven of nine Northwestern players advanced, making Wildcats nearly a quarter of the field in Saturday's round of 32. From there, Lau and first year Erica Jessel both beat players from Wisconsin to advance on, then both dropped their round-of-16 matches to conclude their singles journeys.
Overall, the 'Cats picked up 17 singles victories between qualifying, main draw and consolation action. They paired that with eight total doubles victories, beginning with all three pairs who played in first-round matches on Friday.
Complete Northwestern results can be viewed here, while the full singles and doubles brackets from the weekend are available here.
The 'Cats will return to fall action in two weeks, when they'll visit East Lansing for the first of two invitationals hosted by Michigan State this fall. The Green and White Championship is set to kick off on Friday, Oct. 25, and run until Sunday, Oct. 27.
