‘Cats notch four wins in 29-15 setback
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (January 14, 2024) – Massey Odiotti and Maxx Mayfield turned in impressive efforts to highlight victories in four weight classes for Northwestern wrestling (0-2, 0-1 B1G) as the Wildcats dropped a 29-15 decision to host Maryland (3-2, 1-1 B1G) this afternoon inside the XFINITY Center Pavilion in College Park, Md.
Making his debut in Big Ten action, Odiotti started fast in a 125-pound tilt with Tommy Capul, notching a pair of first-period takedowns, and never looked back. The Wilmette, Ill. product piled up five takedowns in total, the last of which came with only seven seconds remaining in the third period to secure a 21-4 win by technical fall.
Ranked No. 15 at 165 pounds by InterMat, Mayfield followed a similar script to Odiotti in his matchup against AJ Rodrigues, scoring two takedowns in the opening frame to establish an early advantage en route to a 16-3 major decision victory.
No. 25 Troy Fisher found himself in a nip and tuck battle with Chase Mielnik at 184 pounds. After both wrestlers saw takedowns wiped off the board by video review during the second period, Fisher came up with the bout's deciding strike with just over 20 seconds gone in the third period, driving through Mielnik to secure a takedown that ultimately proved to be the difference in a 4-2 decision.
Jon Halvorsen closed the afternoon on a high note for the 'Cats, matching up against Kevin Makosy at 285 pounds. In only the second heavyweight appearance of his career, Halvorsen tallied a first-period takedown to jump in front early before amassing 1:07 of riding time, a total that provided the final margin of victory in a 6-5 triumph.
Northwestern closes out a two-dual road swing to open Big Ten Conference action on Saturday, January 20 when it travels downstate to Champaign, Ill. for a 2 p.m. tilt with in-state rival Illinois inside Huff Hall.
