First-year Wildcats gain valuable insight on professional development support and resources available to them as student-athletes.
EVANSTON, ILL. - Northwestern Athletics and its Kabiller NU for Life Program hosted its annual First-Year Foundations to welcome and introduce the youngest Wildcats to an array of career and professional development support and resources available to them as student-athletes. "It's how we ensure we are setting our students up for success." said Ahmad Boyd, Assistant Director of the NU for Life program.
An Advisory Group led by upper class student-athletes facilitated in February its most recent event, now in its 9th year providing a bird's-eye-view of Kabiller NU for Life program's life-changing and career-enhancing support system and resources. The first years immersed themselves into interactive professional development sessions in communication best practices and developing social presence. The night concluded with a roundtable discussion allowing the first years to gain valuable insight from their upper-class peers about the vast resources in store for them, such as mentorship, one-on-one career consulting, informational interviews, access to alumni network, internships and job opportunities.
"It's one of the most important things we get to do, and to watch our upper-class advisory board members take ownership of this event because of the impact it has had on them has been a joy to see," said Boyd.
"I love the First-Year Foundations event because it's a great opportunity to be introduced to both Kabiller NU for Life and professional development entirely," said Charlotte Cronister, an Executive Board Member and senior on the volleyball team. "This event meant a lot to me as a first year because it showed me how committed the athletics department is to helping advance not only our careers as athletes but us as people as well. It's an honor to be a part of the executive board and to have a role in putting together this event and leading such an informative and fun event for members of the student-athlete community."
"The First-Year Foundations and NU for Life is a great opportunity to give back to the younger Wildcat athletes. The event is a one-of-a-kind experience and I'm proud to have had the privilege to facilitate and be a part of it," said Tyler Haskins, an Executive Board member and senior on the football team.
In the upcoming years, these first-year student-athletes will have the chance to network with numerous professionals and alumni, will experience I-MAP, a three-to-five-day immersion experience in an industry of their choice (all-expense paid), and will have the opportunity to apply for the annual Kabiller Award, which offers standout student-athletes a $5,000 grant for use in professional development.
