Northwestern returns to action at Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, December 29-30

DeKALB, Ill. (December 19, 2023) – Four Wildcats notched bonus point victories as Northwestern wrestling dropped a narrow 18-17 decision to host Northern Illinois this afternoon in its 2023-24 dual meet opener inside the Convocation Center in DeKalb, Ill.

Coming off an eighth-place finish earlier this month at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Trevor Chumbley turned in a dominant effort at 157 pounds against Alec Rees, putting up a 20-4 victory by technical fall.  The St. Charles, Ill. native started fast, surging to a pair of first-period takedowns en route to the fifth technical fall victory of his career.

Maxx Mayfield provided late fireworks in a clash with Tommy Bennett at 165 pounds.  Staked to an 8-3 edge in the final minute of the third period, Mayfield scored a key takedown with 30 seconds remaining before riding out Bennett for the remainder of the frame to ultimately secure an 11-3 win by major decision.

Wrestling at 174 pounds, David Ferrante looked to follow a similar script to his 165-pound counterpart against Ricardo Salinas.  Locked in a 6-6 stalemate at the end of the first period, Ferrante edged in front, 7-6, with an escape to open the frame ahead of a takedown that gave the Huntley, Ill. product a 10-6 advantage heading to the third period.  With his lead sitting at 14-8 in the closing seconds, Ferrante muscled his way to a vital takedown of his own to wrap up a win by major decision, prevailing by an 18-8 final.

Evan Bates hit the accelerator from the opening whistle against Sean Carroll at 197 pounds, scoring a takedown in the opening minute before adding a four-point near fall that gave the redshirt sophomore a commanding 7-0 edge.  Bates went on to stretch that gap to double digits, 13-3, in the second period on his way to a 15-6 major decision.

Northwestern returns to action December 29-30 when it hosts the 59th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill.  More information, including a link to purchase tickets, can be found here.
