EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern Athletics Civic Engagement Committee partnered with Be the Match through a blood stem cell and bone marrow registry drive on Tuesday, April 12. The drive was held in the lobby at Walter Athletics Center.

Be the Match is a National Marrow Donor Program that helps patients diagnosed with blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell anemia and other life-threatening diseases receive a transplant. Given Be the Match focuses on finding donors ages 18-44, it is important to register as many college students as possible.

Wildcats' student-athletes rose to the challenge and registered nearly 70 students over the course of 2-hours. The process for joining the registry involves two simple steps: registering online and taking a cheek swab.

The opportunity to potentially save an individual's life by joining the registry was an easy decision for rising senior on the wrestling team Trevor Chumbley. Chumbley states, "I was very excited to sign-up and help in any way that I could. It is an amazing organization and I hope I receive a call someday to help someone."
