ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 5 Northwestern lacrosse (8-2, 2-0 B1G) never trailed and improved to 11-0 all-time against Michigan as it defeated the No. 12 Wolverines 12-9 on Saturday afternoon at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Snow had to be cleared off the field prior to the game and both teams battled cold temperatures that hovered in the low 20s.

Both Jill Girardi and Elle Hansen each scored four goals to lead the team, with Hansen tallying a career-high. Lauren Gilbert registered a career-high five assists, and despite not scoring a goal, kept the Wildcat offense in attack mode. Erin Coykendall also logged five points (2g, 3a).

Goalkeeper Madison Doucette faced 34 shots and registered a career-high 16 saves. She recorded the most saves by a Northwestern netminder since Julie Krupnick (16) in a 21-15 win over Dartmouth on Feb. 15, 2019.

The 'Cats outscored the Wolverines (9-2, 1-1 B1G) 7-6 in the second half, and took a comfortable four-goal lead in the fourth quarter.

Northwestern held its opponent to just three goals in the first half for the second consecutive game and held a 5-3 lead at the break. Girardi scored the game's first goal at the 2:45 mark of the first quarter, and was followed by scores from Coykendall and Hansen to open up a 3-0 lead.

Kaitlyn Mead led Michigan's offense with three goals and one assist. NU's offense fired 39 shots, its second-highest total of the season. The win is the program's 15th straight in Big Ten play, the longest streak in program history.

The Wildcats begin their two-game road trip to the Keystone State by continuing conference play at 6 p.m. CT, on Friday, April 1, against Penn State.
