DETROIT, Mich. – For the first time in 15 years, Northwestern saw four wrestlers earn All-American honors at the NCAA Championships en route to a sixth place team finish, the fourth-highest finish in team history.
Each of the Wildcats' four All-Americans recorded a career-best finish on the podium, headlined by Ryan Deakin capturing the 157 lb national championship to become the ninth individual Wildcat wrestler to win an individual title. In addition to Deakin, Michael DeAugustino placed fourth in the 125 lb bracket, Lucas Davison placed sixth in the heavyweight bracket, and Chris Cannon placed seventh at 133 lbs.
Northwestern entered this weekend as one of just three schools in the nation to send all 10 of its starting lineup to the NCAA Championships and ultimately saw six of its wrestlers register at least one win to finish with 57.5 team points on the tournament. The sixth place finished was the fifth-highest among any Big Ten school at the championship, as well as Northwestern's highest since placing fourth in 2007.
This marks the second-straight season in which head coach Matt Storniolo's group has ended the season ranked in the Top-10 of the nation, having earned a Top-10 finish with three All-Americans in the 2021 NCAA Championships. The last time the Wildcats finished in the Top 10 at NCAA's in consecutive seasons was in 1989-90.
At 157 lbs, Deakin cruised to a national title with a perfect 5-0 showing at the championships to finish his last collegiate with an unblemished 18-0 record. The Broomfield, Colorado native joined an exclusive group as one of just four NU wrestlers ever to be named a four-time All-American, and joins Wildcat legend Jake Herbert as the only other Northwestern wrestler to be a four-time All-American, three-time Big Ten champion and a national champion. Over his final three seasons at Northwestern, Deakin posted a 50-1 record that included undefeated campaigns in 2020 (21-0) and 2022 (18-0).
At 125 lbs, Michael DeAugustino earned a career-best fourth place finish and became a two-time All-American with a 5-2 showing at the NCAA championships. Having also been named an NWCA All-American in 2020, DeAugustino becomes just the third Wildcat 125lb wrestler to earn multiple All-American honors–also done by Sebastian Rivera at 125 lbs in 2018-19, and three times by Brandon Precin in 2008-09, 2011.
In his first season wrestling at 285 lbs, Lucas Davison earned a career-best Top-6 national finish, becoming the first Wildcat heavyweight to earn an All-American honor since Mike McMullan in 2015. After storming to the quarterfinals with two decisive wins, Davison gave No. 1 seed Gable Steveson (Minnesota) his most competitive match of the season in a 10-5 decision in which Davison became the first wrestler all year to secure a takedown and not surrender bonus points to the reigning Hodge Trophy winner and Olympic Gold Medalist. This marks Davison's second time earning All-American honors, having also been named an NWCA honorable mention selection at 197 lbs in 2020 following the cancellation of the championships.
In his second trip to the NCAA Championships, Chris Cannon matched a career-best finish with a seventh place finish on his way to earning his second-straight All-American honors. Cannon becomes the first Wildcat to be named an All-American in each of his two seasons wrestling in the NU lineup since fellow New Jersey native Sebastian Rivera did so in 2018-19 at 125 lbs.
Also recording wins at NCAA's were Yahya Thomas, who advanced to Friday evening's "Blood Round" match with three straight victories following an opening round loss, as well as Frankie Tal-Shahar who took down No. 7 seed and reigning All-American Clay Carlson (South Dakota State) to advance in the 141 lb division in his first-ever bout at the championships.
