Fourth Quarter Flurry Leads Wildcats to Victory Over Arizona State

EVANSTON, Ill. – Five consecutive goals to open the fourth quarter helped Northwestern defeat Arizona State 16-8 on Sunday afternoon inside Ryan Fieldhouse. The Wildcats (2-1) used seven unanswered scores over the third and fourth periods and an 8-3 advantage in the fourth to pull away.
Brennan Dwyer led the attack by posting a career-high five goals, including three over NU's big 7-0 run. Hannah Johnson scored her first collegiate goal and finished with four. Erin Coykendall (2) and Samantha Smith (2) joined Dwyer and Johnson with multiple scores.
Johnson scored a game-high six points by adding two assists. Erin Coykendall and Lauren Gilbert also added two assists for the 'Cats.
The Wildcats eight-goal fourth quarter equaled their offensive output of the first three quarters combined. NU clung to a 6-4 lead at intermission.
Katie Brodsky and Emily Munro tied for the Sun Devils (0-2) team-lead with two goals each.
Madison Doucette logged nine saves overall and seven in the first half in net for Northwestern. She faced 17 shots on goal, while Arizona State's Katie Vahle tallied eight saves on 24 shots on goal.
Northwestern travels to Notre Dame for a 7 p.m. tilt on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
