EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern swimming and diving program teamed up with NASA Wildcat Aquatics to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 17. Led by Northwestern student-athletes, both teams engaged in thoughtful discussions related to inclusion and how to make change in our community.
During the zoom program, participants watched Dr. King's iconic "I Have a Dream" speech, and then divided into small groups to share both the dreams they hold and action steps to making those dreams a reality.
Senior women's swimmer Jasmine Hellmer stated, "Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was not only a dreamer, but his ability to exert empathy and instill hope through his words was truly remarkable."
Northwestern student-athletes introduced its "Together We Win" campaign in order to provide an example of an action step that the department took to raise awareness to its commitment to creating an inclusive community.
Participants then divided into breakout rooms once more to reflect and discuss how they, too, can prioritize inclusion in their lives.
"It was great to be able to connect with NASA and have a dialogue with them on the importance of the day and legacy of Dr. King, and talk about how we as individuals can do good in our community," said junior men's diver Henry Schirmer.
In honor of the dedication that Dr. King devoted to service, both programs participated in a donation drive to support Cradles to Crayons, a non-profit that provides children living in under resourced situations with essential items.
