Several members of Northwestern University's Department of Athletics and Recreation participated in the 10th annual Community Outreach Day on Friday, June 25. This event is a proud tradition in the department that devotes one day to volunteering at organizations, businesses and schools in Evanston. Although inclement weather forced a handful of outdoor sites to reschedule, a group of 10 staff and coaches were able to volunteer at the Merion, a senior living community center.

At the Merion, coaches and staff helped residents plant flowers for their indoor units and outdoor patios. Residents had the option to select their favorite easy-to-grow flower seeds, and then the 'Cats helped them fill their pots with soil and seeds, which was topped off with a little bit of water. In addition to the smiles that were present from planting beautiful flowers, a contagious energy filled the room as staff, coaches and residents had the opportunity to mingle in-person for the first time since the onset of the pandemic.

The 'Cats Give Back program and this year's Community Outreach Day is supported by Northwestern Medicine. Members of the athletic department will continue the department's tradition of giving back on Friday, July 30.
