EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted its annual Canned Food Drive from November through November 30.
Throughout the month-long drive, Wildcats student-athletes collected non-perishable food items within their respective teams to support Family Focus of Evanston. Family Focus is a nonprofit that provides support, services, and programs to more than 200 families in the community.
"The annual food drive is a great way for both teams and staff in the athletic department to come together as a whole and exemplify how they can use their platform to support members in the Evanston community," said men's soccer student-athlete Quinn Dudek.
Items were raised through contributions from staff and all 19 of Northwestern's varsity athletics programs. In addition, fans had the ability to donate items at the Wildcats women's basketball (Nov. 14), men's basketball (Nov. 18), and volleyball (Nov. 21) games. All fans who donated an item had the ability to enter a raffle to win a prize.
"I think it's a powerful way to come together as a team, and a good reminder that we can use our talents, personalities and resources at Northwestern to do great things out in our community and out in the world," member of the men's soccer Julian Zighelboim said.
When reflecting on what has become a proud tradition in the department, member of the SAAC Executive Board and student-athlete on the women's soccer team Francesca Docters noted, "There are many people in our community who constantly support us on a daily basis, and it's just so important to reciprocate the generosity that they show us, and the canned food drive provides an awesome opportunity to do just that."
