1/21/2020 9:23:00 AM | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - The Northwestern women's fencing team was back in action this Sunday at Penn Duals hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. The 'Cats closed out the weekend 2-3.

The Wildcats, who were ranked No. 9 by the College Fencing 360 Coaches Poll ahead of the Penn Duals, faced No. 7 Temple, Brandeis, No. 10 UPenn, No. 3 Columbia and Drew.

Epee fencer Emma Scala paced the Wildcats with nine wins. Foil fencers Alyssa Chen and Sarah Filby and sabre fencer Robyn Song also excelled with seven wins each.

To open up the weekend, the Wildcats went against No. 7 Temple and lost 17-10.

In the second round, Northwestern faced Brandeis. With 2-1 efforts from Natalie Kim, Adelle Berdichevsky, Blodwen Bindas, Julia Shalansky and Filby, 'Cats clinched a 14-13 victory.

In the third round, #B1GCats faced No. 10 UPenn. Despite a 3-0 sweep from Filby, 'Cats fell short to the Quakers, 13-14.

Next, the Wildcats fenced No. 3 Columbia and lost 15-12. Again, despite 2-1 efforts from Anna Biasco, Scala, Bindas and Chen, 'Cats fell short to the Lions.

In the final round, Northwestern beat Drew, 25-2. With 3-0 records from Scala, Kim and Berdichevsky, the epee squad led the 'Cats to victory. Sabre fencers Abby Tartell and Song and foil fencers Julia Shalansky and Chen also impressed with their own sweeps.

"It was encouraging to see our team get stronger as the day progressed," said head coach Zach Moss. "A couple of tight losses that could have gone either way against top-10 teams were tremendous moments of growth for our team. We learned more about ourselves and what we need to do to be successful at the highest level."

Chicago's Big Ten Team will resume dual competition on Jan. 25 at the DeCicco Duals hosted by Notre Dame.
