Lavelle Tosses Quality Start, ’Cats Fall to Purdue, 5-2

EVANSTON, Ill. — Despite Quinn Lavelle's fourth quality start this season, Northwestern was felled, 5-2, by Purdue in the Big Ten opener at Rocky & Berenice Miller Park on Friday afternoon.
Six different Wildcats collected hits in the affair, led by infielder Jack Dunn's 1-for-2 game with a walk, hit by pitch, stolen base, and two runs scored. Outfielders Casey O'Laughlin and David Dunn both drove in runs in the contest.
Lavelle tossed 6.0-innings, while allowing three earned runs. The sophomore struck out four and walked only one.
Northwestern struck first with an RBI single by O'Laughlin drove in Jack Dunn. Purdue would tie then take the lead in the third inning with two runs.
The Wildcats equalized with a David Dunn single in the third.
The Boilermakers would take their last lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single. They proceeded to scratch across two more that were unearned due to errors.
NU got strong relief pitching to end the game, as Anthony Alepra and Tommy D'Alise combined for 3.0-scoreless frames. Alepra fanned three batters in 2.0-innings of work.
The Wildcats and the Boilermakers will play game two of the three game set tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. CT.
