Evanston, Ill. -- Northwestern commanded the podium Saturday morning at Norris Aquatics Center, taking down UIC and Illinois for their first win of the season. The men defeated UIC 210-83, and the women beat UIC 218-81 and Illinois 192-107.

The men's team starts off the season 2-0. The women's team improves to 2-1 after this morning's earlier defeat at SMU. They now hold a 1-0 record in the Big Ten with their win over Illinois.

The men's team also got off to a strong start with a win in the 200 medley relay thanks to sophomores Manu Bacarizo, Henry Blaul, Ezra Mizgala, and Andrew Zhang. The Wildcats took first in the men's and women's 400 free relays as well.

Yulia Groysman took the top spot in both long-distance events, finishing the 1000 free in 10:20.21 and the 500 free with a time of 5:03.92. Ally Larson also topped the podium in two individual events, the 200 fly and the 200 IM, along with a second place finish in the 200 free. Danielle Nowaski, Emma Lepisova, and Erdemli also earned spots on the podium a total of nine times.

For the men, first-year Marcus Mok stole the show. He won three individual events, with first place finishes in the 100 and 200 breast, and the 200 IM, which he completed with a time of 1:51.98. First-year Ryan King followed teammate junior DJ Hwang in the 1000 and 500 frees, completing a 1-2 sweep in both events.

Two Northwestern divers also topped the scoreboard. Sophomore Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson took first in the 3M, and sophomore Evan Labuda won the 1M. For the women, first-year Jaye Patrick finished second in the 3M and third in the 1M.

The Wildcats return to the pool on November 1 when they travel to Rochester to take on Oakland.
