EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern senior student-athletes heard from recent graduates about the transition from university to post-college life last week at the inaugural Senior Celebration. The event was a joint effort between the NU for Life and the King NU P.R.I.D.E Program.

Held at the McCormick Foundation Center, the night featured five student-athlete alumni discussing their experience after NU and answering questions from seniors looking for advice and guidance.

Panelists for the evening included Belinda Niu (Women's Tennis/Chicago Public Education Fund), Damien Proby (Football/Chubb), Christen Johnson (Women's Basketball/Chicago Tribune Media Group), and Kyle Ruchim (Baseball/Schaumberg Boomers/DePaul Law School).

The moderator for the night was sports broadcaster and TV personality Lisa Byington, who played both soccer and basketball for the 'Cats during her time at Northwestern and recently covered March Madness for CBS/Turner.

Panelists emphasized the importance of mentors and networking when graduating and looking for opportunities after Northwestern.

"Embrace your friendships and expand those conversations … Push those conversations," advised Proby, who graduated in 2013.

Ruchim agreed. "If you get to know people who are doing what you want to do, you will find mentors," he said.

One of Northwestern's goals as a world-class academic institution as well as a high-performing athletic organization is to ensure that student-athletes are prepared to be successful following graduation. Events like this one allow students to gain first-hand insight into the opportunities awaiting them after leaving campus.

The King NU P.R.I.D.E. Program's mission is to work towards holistically developing Wildcat student-athletes. This is done through helping to find personal success through commitment to the athletic department and the larger Northwestern community while enhancing leadership skills, celebrating diversity, and promoting student-athlete welfare through meaningful programming.

NU for Life connects current student-athletes to future employers and mentors and presents student-athletes with advice as well as opportunities for their futures following their athletic career at Northwestern. After graduation, the Northwestern community continues to provide mentorship and guidance to past student-athletes in the professional world.
