No. 8 Northwestern Downs No. 5 Georgia Tech For Sixth Straight Win

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 8 Northwestern notched its sixth straight win, including its third over a top-10 team, Friday afternoon as it defeated fifth-ranked Georgia Tech, 4-2, at Combe Tennis Center.

The victory was a bit of payback for the Wildcats who dropped a regular-season matchup to the Yellow Jackets a year ago in addition to having their season ended at the hands of Georgia Tech in the NCAA tournament.

The doubles matchups lived up to their billing with the visitors eventually pulling out a tightly contested battle. The Yellow Jackets got a 6-4 win at No. 3 before the 23rd-ranked duo of Alex Chatt and Lee Or topped the 62nd-ranked team of Ida Jarlskog/Johnnise Renaud by the same score.

That left the doubles point to be decided by a showdown between top-5 teams at No. 1. The top-ranked duo of Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp won the first three games but the fourth-ranked team of Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones rallied to take a 5-4 lead. Larner and Lipp were able to break their serve to remain alive and then got a hold to go up 6-5. The Georgia Tech pair held to set up a decisive tiebreak that the Yellow Jackets eventually won, putting the guests up 1-0 in the match.

The narrow loss in doubles had no effect on the Wildcats' singles performance, however. Northwestern came out on fire, capturing the first set in five of the six matches.

It didn't take NU long to even the match as first-year Inci Ogut made short work of her opponent at No. 5, winning 6-2, 6-1.

Minutes later, 58th-ranked Maddie Lipp closed out a straight-sets win of her own as she defeated Jones 6-1, 6-3, giving Northwestern a 2-1 lead. The 'Cats pulled within one point of victory when Or finished a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2.

Georgia Tech got back on the board with a victory at No. 4, leaving the match to be decided by a pair of contests in the third set at Nos. 1 and 6. In a back-and-forth match, Julie Byrne had the honor of clinching the victory at No. 6 as she took down Victoria Flores 6-2, 0-6, 6-3, giving NU its third top-10 win of the season.

Northwestern returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Purdue at Combe Tennis Center.
