'Cats Remain Unbeaten in Big Ten Play With 6-1 Win Over Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Ninth-ranked Northwestern ran its Big Ten record to a perfect 4-0 with a 6-1 victory at Maryland Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats (12-4, 4-0 B1G) jumped out to an early advantage thanks to winning the doubles point. Northwestern picked up a pair of 6-2 victories, as the No. 2 team of Alex Chatt and Lee Or as well as the No. 3 duo of Rheeya Doshi and Julie Byrne each picked up wins.
In singles action, NU earned four victories in straight sets and another in a third-set super-breaker. At No. 3, 51st-ranked Maddie Lipp was dominant as she surrendered only two games in earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Julie Byrne increased the visitors' lead to 3-0 as she allowed only three games to her opponent in picking up a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5. Lee Or, ranked No. 92, had the honor of clinching the match as she earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Maryland got on the board with a win at No. 4, but Northwestern got a 6-3, 6-3 triumph from Inci Ogut at No. 6 before 50th-ranked Erin Larner rallied back from a set down to earn a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) win at No. 1 to close out the match.
The Wildcats return to action at 11 a.m. Sunday when they host Rutgers at Combe Tennis Center.
