Wildcats End Historic Regular Season at NU Duals

2/5/2018 1:23:00 PM | Women's Fencing

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – No. 8 Northwestern finished the regular season with 47 wins, a program record, after collecting eight wins against some of the top teams in the country at the Northwestern Duals this weekend in South Bend, Indiana.

Head coach Zach Moss, in his second season, broke the record set in 2009, when the Wildcats totaled 45 wins. This season, the team has also set the program record for longest win-streak, with the 25-game mark eclipsing the previous record of 20 set in 2014 and 2002.

The Wildcats finished 8-4 on the weekend with victories against No. 4 Princeton, North Carolina, Stanford, UC San Diego, Incarnate Word, Wayne State, Lawrence and Caltech. The Tar Heels were receiving the 11th most votes in the last College Fencing 360 Coaches' Poll, while the Cardinal and the Tritons both received votes as well.

Over the weekend, both Pauline Hamilton and Anna Tolley joined the 100-win club, becoming the seventh and eighth active Wildcats to do so. Emine Yücel and Ella Lombard had done so the week before.

Yücel led all 'Cats on the weekend with 16 wins with a tough workload in sabre, while first year Sarah Filby and Junior Yvonne Chart did the heavy lifting in foil, collecting 14 and 13 wins, respectively. Hamilton paced the epee squad with 11 victories and was the fourth to earn double-digit wins over the two days.

Northwestern also honored its seniors at its nominal home meet, recognizing Kaila Budofsky, Anna Tolley, Lucia Procopio, Sacha Bazzal, Stefani Kahookele, Katie Van Riper, Michelle Lee and Sydney Larrier. Procopio stayed perfect with a 9-0 record on the weekend while Tolley joined Bazzal and Van Riper in crossing the century mark for wins.

The Wildcats started the weekend by chopping down the Cardinal, 20-7, in a rematch with the hosts of the Western Invitational. Two perfect performances came from first year Marta Amador Molina in epee and sophomore Abby Tartell in sabre. The 'Cats finished the season with a 6-0 record in the first match of duals, the first time they have gone undefeated in such contests since 2010, when they finished 41-6 overall.

Northwestern followed that up with a dramatic 14-13 win over No. 4 Princeton, enacting revenge for their earlier defeat to the Tigers at the Elite Invitational. Filby clinched the deciding bout with the score tied 13-13, coming back from 4-3 down a minute to go to win 5-4 over Taylor Chin, a former NCAA Championships participant. Maddy Curzon came up clutch with the only other 3-0 performance of the dual.

The 'Cats could not keep their momentum going with a tough loss to No. 7 Temple, 16-11. Filby had another 3-0 record in foil while Hamilton had two wins in epee.

NU bounced right back to ground Incarnate Word, 22-5. Anya Harkness took three wins in epee against the Cardinals while Isabella Min, Alexandra Banin, Sofia Simontov and Procopio all went 2-0 as well.

In the senior day matchup against Wayne State, the 'Cats blocked the Warriors, 22-5, with all seniors participating in a bout. Shirley Luong and Tolley both earned bagels in epee and Procopio did the same in foil. Senior Sacha Bazzal picked up two wins herself in sabre.

Northwestern finished Saturday with an extremely tight matchup against No. 1 Notre Dame, the defending national champions. It came down to the wire with a tie score with three bouts to go, but the Fighting Irish eventually prevailed, 15-12. The sabre squad led the effort with a 6-3 showing powered by two wins each from Alexis Browne, Curzon and Yücel, while first year Justine Banbury was the other Wildcat with two wins, coming in foil.

The Purple and White started day two of the duals by skewering the UC San Diego Tritons, 22-5. It was a strong performance all-around, with Sharon Chen, Van Riper, Amador Molina, Hamilton, Banbury, and Yücel all going three for three.

The 'Cats could not exorcise their demons against the Blue Devils, and fell to Duke 17-10, despite two wins each from Filby and Chart. In a rivalry matchup next against No. 5 Ohio State, the Buckeyes got the better of Northwestern, 18-9. Chart and Yücel had two wins each.

NU remained resilient and closed out its home duals with three straight wins, starting with a rupturing of the Tar Heels, 16-11. The foil squad delivered the goods against North Carolina, a team receiving votes, with a 9-0 performance, including three from sophomore Amy Jia.

The #B1GCats hammered Lawrence, 18-9, in the penultimate match of the day. First year Zhesi Zhuang was the only fencer with a 3-0 match against the Vikings, while Anna Tolley and Adelle Berdichevsky had strong showings in epee.

Northwestern dammed the Beavers 27-0, for its second shutout of Caltech this season. The squad increased its shutout counter on the season to six.

Chicago's Big Ten Team has next weekend off before sending a handful of fencers to compete in the Junior Olympics in Memphis, Tenn. on Feb 16. The team now turns its attention to the postseason, with the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships looming large on Feb. 24-25 in Columbus, Ohio.
