EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern extended its duals win streak to 17 matches after sweeping the Western Invitational on Sunday in Palo Alto, Calif., marking the second straight undefeated invitational for the team.
The Wildcats defeated Stanford, Florida, Incarnate Word, UC San Diego, Vassar, Air Force and Caltech by a combined score of 152-37. The 'Cats, now at 20-3, are on their longest winning streak since 2014-15, when they won the first 20 matches of the season.
First year Jacqueline Hua posted a perfect 11-0 record in sabre, while Alexandra Banin and Sarah Filby both went undefeated with ten and nine wins, respectively, in foil.
Pauline Hamilton, Anna Tolley, Lucia Procopio, Sharon Chen and Isabella Min won all but one bout each on the day as well.
The Wildcats started the morning off with a tough matchup against the hosts Stanford, but were up to the task. Behind 7-2 wins in foil and epee keyed by 3-0 records from Hamilton and Filby, the 'Cats downed the Cardinal, 18-9.
The Purple and White began to pick up their momentum with a 27-0 shutout over Florida. It was the first shutout in a dual since last season on Jan. 28, 2017, against Detroit at the DeCicco Duals.
Northwestern kept its foot on the gas pedal against Incarnate Word, sinking the Cardinals 25-2 with shutouts from the foil and sabre squad.
The 'Cats prevailed in tight 5-4 battles in epee and sabre against UC San Diego, and put the Tritons away with an 8-1 effort in foil behind 3-0 performances from Filby and Chen.
NU proceeded to dismantle Vassar, 22-5, in another rout. Katie Van Riper went 2-0 in epee and Emine Yücel and Ella Lombard picked up two wins as well.
Air Force battled Northwestern to a tough finish behind a strong effort from their sabre and foil squad who combined to go 10-8. The difference came in epee, where the 'Cats rode a 6-3 score behind two wins from Hamilton and Harkness, and a sub-in win from Marta Amador Molina to take the overall match, 14-13.
The Wildcats closed their day with an emphatic 27-0 win over Caltech in another shutout. The last time Northwestern posted two shutouts in the same day was on Nov. 2, 2014, when it did so at the home NU Duals against Wisconsin and Bradley.
The #B1GCats are back in action this weekend at the two-day Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by Penn.
