URBANA, Ill. -- Third-seeded Northwestern came up just short in its bid to reach the championship match of the Big Ten tournament, falling 4-1 to second-seeded Michigan on Saturday at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus.
Michigan took the doubles point as the Wolverines picked up matching 6-3 wins at Nos. 1 and 3 to take the early 1-0 lead in the match.
Northwestern responded, however, with a solid start to singles play. The Wildcats were victorious in the first set in five of the six matches, positioning themselves to make a comeback.
In the one match where the 'Cats didn't take the first set, Michigan got a 6-1, 6-1 win by Chiara Lommer at No. 3 to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead in the match.
Lee Or was forced to a third set at No. 4, but she bounced back convincingly to earn a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win over Alex Najarian to get the Wildcats on the board.
The remaining four matches all headed towards their completion at the same time. A three-set win for Brienne Minor at No. 2 put the Wolverines up 3-1, before a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory by Kate Fahey at No. 1 gave Michigan the match, allowing them to advance to Sunday's championship against Ohio State. Both Alex Chatt at No. 5 and Jillian Rooney at No. 6 were closing on wins for the Wildcats when the match was clinched.
Northwestern will await its NCAA tournament fate when the field is announced at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
