EVANSTON, Ill. -- Playing outdoors at home for the first time this spring, No. 36 Northwestern raised its Big Ten record to 8-0 by rolling past Penn State for a 4-0 win Friday afternoon at Vandy Christie Tennis Center.
The victory was the Wildcats' seventh straight, improves them to 12-8 overall and sets up a battle for first place in the conference against fourth-ranked Ohio State on Sunday.
Northwestern got off to a slow start in doubles against the Nittany Lions but bounced back to take the early lead in the match. All three of NU's teams fell behind early, but 15th-ranked team of Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp posted a 6-3 win before the No. 3 pairing of Brooke Rischbieth and Lee Or notched a 6-2 victory to put the hosts up 1-0 in the match.
The 'Cats kept things going in singles play by taking the first set in five of the six matches, including surrendering three games or fewer in four of the matches. Lipp was dominant in her match, taking down Devan McCluskey 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 before Chatt soon followed by wrapping up a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Samantha Smith at No. 4
Rheeya Doshi had the honor of concluding the match when she completed her 6-1, 7-5 victory over Jacqueline Zuhse at No. 3.
Sunday's showdown against Ohio State is set for an 11 a.m. start. Weather permitting, the match will be held at Vandy Christie Tennis Center.
