No. 10 Duke Escapes With Another 4-3 Win Over No. 23 'Cats

DURHAM, N.C. -- For the second time in eight days, No. 23 Northwestern gave No. 10 Duke all it could handle, but the Blue Devils managed to pull out another 4-3 victory over the Wildcats at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
One week after Duke edged NU 4-3 in a match that decided a trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, the Blue Devils pulled out the decisive match again.
Northwestern took the early lead thanks to winning the doubles point. The Wildcats got a victory from the No. 2 team of Rheeya Doshi and Lee Or who topped Alyssa Smith and Chalena Scholl, 6-4, before Erin Larner and Brooke Rischbieth teamed up to win the clinching match with a 7-5 win at No. 3 over Samantha Harris and Rebecca Smaller.
Duke got singles wins from all three of its nationally ranked players at Nos. 2, 3 and 4 but a win mixed in by Larner at No. 1 – 6-2, 6-3 over Harris – kept the Wildcats within 3-2 to in the match.
When Alex Chatt finished off Smith for a 6-0, 5-7, 6-1 win at No. 5, the match was squared at 3-3 with only one match remaining on the courts.
Rischbieth gave Smaller all she could handle in the matchup at No. 6, but the Duke junior managed to escape in a nail-biter, 7-5, 7-6 (5), allowing the host Blue Devils to get away with the narrow match victory once again.
Northwestern returns to action Feb. 17 when it hosts Baylor at Combe Tennis Center.
