'Cats Start Season on Right Foot at Elite Invitational

11/5/2017 2:56:00 PM | Women's Fencing

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Northwestern capped off a successful Elite Invitational this weekend with an emphatic victory over hosts Ohio State on Sunday.

In the first set of duals of the season, the Wildcats finished 5-3 after defeating NJIT and Ohio State Sunday. The Buckeyes finished last season ranked No. 5 in the country. Northwestern's wins on Saturday came against Air Force, Cleveland State and Cornell.

Junior Yvonne Chart led the 'Cats during the weekend with a 12-3 effort in foil in a heavy workload. First Year Anya Harkness posted 11 wins in her first ever competition while sophomore Pauline Hamilton added nine wins of their own.

Seven first-years made their collegiate duals debut for the new-look Wildcats. Anya Harkness and Sarah Filby especially impressed in their first events, finishing 11-4 and 7-3, respectively.

Bazzal and fellow senior Katie Van Riper also recorded their 100th career duals win at the event. The two join juniors Maddy Curzon and Yvonne Chart as the only active 'Cats with 100 or more career wins.

Northwestern opened competition on Sunday with a tightly contested matchup against Princeton, who finished No. 2 in the country at the end of last season. Despite an 8-1 effort from foil and 3-0 sweeps from Filby and Chart, the Tigers prevailed 15-12. Curzon also went 2-1 in her first bouts of the invitational after missing Saturday's matches.

The Wildcats rebounded to take care of NJIT 16-11 in the second match of the day. Sophomore Amy Jia posted a clean sweep in foil, as did first year Ashley Gomerman in her first ever collegiate bouts in sabre. Jacqueline Hua earned her first two career wins as well.

In a heavily anticipated matchup against Ohio State, the No. 3 team in the country last season and a conference rival, the 'Cats delivered a massive 15-12 victory in a team performance. Junior Ella Lombard, Hamilton, Filby, Jia, Chart and Curzon all won two bouts each to chip in for the win.

On Saturday, Northwestern opened the Duals by grounding Air Force, 16-11. Isabella Min and Anya Harkness both won their first career bout, while Abby Tartell, Alexandra Banin, Chart and Jia all turned in two or more wins.

Northwestern continued on to defeat Cleveland State 22-5. Sofia Simontov earned her first career dual win while walk-on senior Sydney Larrier fenced in her first ever Division I bouts.

North Carolina tripped up the Wildcats, 16-11 in the third match on Saturday. Filby earned her first career win, while Bazzal, Chart, Van Riper and Harkness each posted two wins.

The 'Cats brought renewed energy to the next match against Penn, but fell short in a 15-12 defeat to the Quakers. NU finished off the day, however, on a high note in a 22-5 defeat over Cornell, who received votes throughout last year's polls. Justine Banbury earned her first ever collegiate wins with a 3-0 sweep of the Big Red, a feat matched by Tartell, Bazzal, and Hamilton.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is action next Sunday at the Vassar Invitational in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Last year, the team went a perfect 8-0 at the event.
