
Northwestern Continues Winning Ways at Philadelphia Duals

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Northwestern continued its hot start to 2017 by notching four more wins at the Philadelphia Duals over the weekend. The Wildcats are 20-5 now and ranked No. 8 in the country.
Chicago's Big Ten Team ran its winning streak to 18 before losing its only dual of the day to No. 6 Penn in a narrow 15-12 decision. The 'Cats took down Temple, Sacred Heart, Johns Hopkins and Cornell.
Northwestern started the day with a 16-11 win over Temple, led by the foil squad, which went 6-3. A 21-6 domination of Sacred Heart followed with all three weapons groups going 7-2. The epee was a bright spot for the 'Cats against Penn, posting a 5-4 record, while foil returned to form in a 22-5 win over Johns Hopkins, going 9-0. The 'Cats used a strong sabre push against Cornell for a 16-11 victory.
All told, each of the three weapons groups for Northwestern went a combined 29-16 in the five duals.
Sophomore sabre Maddy Curzon led the way for the Wildcats with an 8-1 mark. She went 3-0 individually against the sixth-ranked Quakers. Katie Van Riper was close behind with a 9-3 record, including a 3-0 performance against Sacred Heart. Stephanie Chan and Kaila Budofsky each went 7-2 at foil. Twelve Northwestern fencers overall left Philadelphia with winning records from the weekend.
The Wildcats are right back at it next weekend they head to South Bend, Ind. for the DeCicco Duals on Saturday, Jan. 28.
