Battle of Big Ten Unbeatens Goes to Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 40 Northwestern took the first point from Ohio State in Big Ten play this season with a victory in doubles play, but the fifth-ranked Buckeyes responded in singles for a 6-1 victory Sunday afternoon.
Both teams came into the contest undefeated in conference play and tied for first place in the league standings alongside Michigan.
Ohio State hadn't allowed a team point against it in its first eight Big Ten matches of the season, but Northwestern claimed the early momentum. The Buckeyes got a win at No. 2, but the 25th-ranked team of Maddie Lipp and Alex Chatt earned an upset win at the top spot as they took down the seventh-ranked duo of Miho Kowase and Anna Sanford, 6-3.
The doubles point was left to be determined by the match at No. 3. Jillian Rooney and Erin Larner were pushed to the limit by Ferny Angeles Paz and Francesca Di Lorenzo, but the Wildcats' pairing was victorious 7-6 (6) to put NU up 1-0 in the match.
However, Northwestern wasn't as fortunate in singles play as Ohio State won three of its matches in straight sets. At No. 3, 58th-ranked Lipp nearly pulled off a victory, but she was edged in a decisive third-set superbreaker, falling 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (13-11).
The Wildcats will wrap up the home portion of their Big Ten season at 3 p.m Friday when they host Michigan.
