Rischbieth Victorious, But 'Cats Fall to Bruins

LOS ANGELES -- Junior Brooke Rischbieth earned a three-set victory at No. 6 singles, but No. 26 Northwestern fell to No. 21 UCLA 6-1 Sunday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Bruins surged in front by taking the doubles point, getting victories at Nos. 1 and 2. The Wildcats did get a win at the No. 3 spot where Alex Chatt and Rischbieth teamed up for a 6-4 victory over Alaina Miller and Kristin Wiley.
UCLA surged in front 3-0 with straight-set wins at Nos. 2 and 5. Despite the deficit, Northwestern remained in contention in each of the four remaining matches, but it wasn't able to come away with enough victories to win the match. Erin Larner went toe-to-toe with Miller at No. 3, but the sophomore came up just short, falling 7-6 (5), 6-4.
In a battle of ranked competitors at the No. 1 spot, 61st-ranked Maddie Lipp gave 18th-ranked Catherine Harrison all she could handle but the Bruin posted a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory. Following another win by the hosts at No. 4 in which Chatt was edged in a second-set tiebreaker, Rischbieth was able to battle past Kelly Shaffer for a hard-fought 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory.
Northwestern returns to action at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 14 when it hosts top-ranked Vanderbilt.
