ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 27 Northwestern jumped out to the early advantage but No. 12 Michigan controlled singles play as the Wildcats suffered a 6-1 loss Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats got their day off to a good start by earning the doubles point.

At No. 1, the duo of junior Alicia Barnett and freshman Erin Larner sprung the upset as they took down the 12th-ranked team of Emina Bektas and Alex Najarian, 8-6.

All three matches were tightly contested and the No. 2 team of freshman Rheeya Doshi and sophomore Brooke Rischbieth sprung an upset of their own as they defeated the 58th-ranked pairing of Sarah Lee and Ronit Yurovsky in a tiebreaker, winning 8-7 (4).

Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they were unable to carry the momentum over to singles play.

Barnett got off to a great start at the No. spot as she took her first set from 23rd-ranked Bektas, 6-3. However, Bektas rallied back to win each of the next two sets and Michigan won each of the other five matches in straight sets.

Northwestern returns to action Sunday when takes on Michigan State in East Lansing.
