EVANSTON, Ill. -- Freshman David Seyferth was the last Wildcat on the courts and delivered the clincher in the Wildcats 4-3 win over Dartmouth Saturday at the Combe Tennis Center. Seyferth took his match at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. The Wildcats take on Arizona State at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The win improves Northwestern to 6-4 on the year.

Northwestern captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The match at No. 1 was the first off the courts with Alex Sanborn and Marc Dwyer easing to a 8-2 win over Mark Brodie and Stephen Greif. NU took an early 1-0 lead with a win at No. 2 doubles. Peter Rispoli and Alexander Thams topped Ari Gayer and Daniel Freeman, 8-4.

With the doubles point already sealed, the last match on the courts was at No. 3 between David Seyferth and Andrew McCarthy against Dartmouth's Curtis Roby and David Fink. The Big Green took the last two games to win 8-6. McCarthy, a freshman who is recovering from injury, made his season debut and showed a powerful serve and several acrobatic moves at the net.

Dartmouth evened the dual at 1-1 with a win at No. 5 singles. Roby defeated Gomez in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. The Wildcats took the lead back with a win at No. 4 where Rispoli downed Guyer in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

The Wildcats got themselves within one match of clinching the dual with a win at No. 3 from Sanborn. The sophomore captain had a tight first set to win 6-3, but had little trouble in the second to defeat Justin Tzou in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.

Dartmouth took the next two matches to tie the match at 3-3 and leave the No. 6 singles match to determine a winner. At No. 1, Dwyer put up a strong fight against Brodie, but could not make it all the way back from a 3-0 hole in the second set. Brodie broke Dwyer to win the match, 6-4, 7-5.

Right after Dwyer's match ended, Dartmouth tied the score with a win at No. 2. Thams took the first set in convincing fashion, 6-2, but Freeman came back to win the match in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. With the match tied, the freshman Seyferth was last on the courts with a 4-2 lead in the third.

Seyferth went up 5-2 by not letting up a point in the crucial game. Grief held serve to force the Wildcat freshman to serve for the match. Seyferth took the first two points to go up 30-love. After exchanging points, the freshman was left with his first match point. Seyferth converted to give the Wildcats the dual, 4-3.
