AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Northwestern advanced four wrestlers to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward), Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) and Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) all won their matches to advance to the round of eight. Session Three begins at 10 a.m. CT Friday and the quarterfinals will be televised live by ESPNU and streamed on ESPN360.
The Wildcats sit in ninth place with 17 points. They are tied with the Hofstra Pride.
Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) and Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) fell in the round of 16. They will begin competition in the wrestleback bracket Friday morning.
At 141 lbs., Lang's match against Iowa State's Mitch Mueller did not even make it through the first period as the junior scored his sixth pin of the year with 43 seconds remaining in the opening stanza.
Lang will face North Carolina State's Darrion Caldwell in the quarterfinals. Caldwell downed Michigan State's eighth-seeded Andy Simmons in the round of 16. Lang scored a 7-3 decision over Caldwell at the ACC/Big Ten Clash earlier this season.
Herbert used seven takedowns to blow past Navy's Antonio Miranda with a 16-6 major decision. Herbert pulled ahead early with two takedowns in the first. He kept the pressure on in the second with three more two-pointers. He used two more takedowns in the third and riding time to seal the 16-6 major decision.
The top-seeded Wildcat will take on Central Michigan's ninth-seeded Christian Sinnott in the quarterfinals.
Tamillow, seeded third at 197 lbs., topped Maryland's Hudson Taylor in the round of 16 by 10-4 decision. Taylor scored first with a takedown in the opening stages of the first period, but Tamillow responded with an escape and a takedown to take a 3-2 lead. Taylor tied the score at 3-3 with an escape as the first period came to an end.
After a penalty point gave Tamillow a 4-3 lead, he scored an escape and another takedown to take a 7-3 lead. He added another takedown and used a riding time advantage to take the 10-4 decision.
Tamillow faces Hofstra's 11th-seeded Chris Weidman in Friday's quarterfinals.
Fox wrestled a close match against Missouri's Mark Ellis at heavyweight. The fourth-seeded junior fell behind early, but scored an escape to close to 2-1 at the end of the first period. Fox used another escape and a second-period takedown to take a 4-2 lead, but Ellis tied the match at 4-4 with an escape late in the second and another one-pointer early in the third.
The Wildcat scored on a takedown late in the third to seize the match and take the 6-5 decision. He faces Oregon State's fifth-seeded Ty Watterson in the quarterfinals.
At 125 lbs., Precin took third-seeded Tanner Gardner of Stanford to overtime in his third-round match, but the Cardinal prevailed by keeping the freshman under control in the first tiebreaker and scoring a reversal in the second to take a 5-2 decision.
The first period ended scoreless and Gardner got on the board first with an escape in the second. Precin reversed in the third to take a 2-1 lead, but could not keep Gardner from escaping to tie the score at 2-2.
After a scoreless overtime, the match went to tiebreakers with Precin on bottom to start the extra frame. Gardner did not allow the Wildcat to free himself and took a 5-2 decision by scoring three points in the second tiebreaker.
Precin will face Army's Fernando Martinez in the wrestleback bracket tomorrow.
At 174 lbs., Hayes fell to Columbia's Matt Palmer by 8-3 decision in the round of 16. Palmer scored first with a takedown and Hayes escaped late in the period to trail 2-1 going into the second.
Hayes tied the match at 2-2 with an escape early in the second, but Palmer used two more takedowns -- one in the second and one in the third period -- to take the 8-3 decision.
The junior will encounter Michigan's third-seeded Steve Luke for the third time this season. Luke has taken the previous two bouts in overtime.
