ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. -- Second-ranked Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) and fourth-ranked Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) won the first two matches, but the fifth-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes took the next seven to defeat the eighth-ranked Wildcats, 24-14, Sunday afternoon at Rolling Meadows High School. The 'Cats wrestled their seventh-straight match without injured and top-ranked Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward).
The loss drops Northwestern to 10-5 in dual matches, 0-2 in the Big Ten.
The second-ranked Tamillow led the dual off at 197 lbs. and scored an early takedown of Rick Loera, wrestling in place of the injured Dan Erekson. The Hawkeye scored an escape to make the score 2-1, but after a late takedown, Tamillow led 4-1 heading into the second.
Loera took a shot at Tamillow's legs in the first minute of the second, but the Wildcat took advantage and threw the Hawkeye to the ground for two points. Tamillow nearly pinned Loera, but had to settle for the three-point near-fall to surge ahead, 9-1.
Tamillow started down in the third, but notched an escape to make the score 10-1. With both wrestlers standing, the Wildcat took Loera down again to make the score 12-1. With the Wildcats needing bonus points, Tamillow scored another takedown and then let Loera escape. He took Loera down again for two more points to pull ahead, 16-4. With the riding time, Tamillow put the 'Cats ahead 5-0 with a 19-4 technical fall.
Fourth-ranked Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) and Iowa's Matt Fields danced around to start the first. Neither wrestler could gain advantage and the first period ended scoreless.
Fox started on top to begin the second and after violently throwing Fields to the mat twice in the period and keeping him under wraps, the second frame ended with no score, with Fox down to begin the third.
The junior scored an escape to go up 1-0 less than 10 seconds into the period. Fox's 1-0 lead stood up in the third. With the riding time, Fox's 2-0 decision gave NU the early 8-0 lead.
Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) took on Iowa's Charlie Falck at 125 lbs. Precin won their last meeting at the National Duals, but the Hawkeye struck first with a two-point takedown. The true freshman escaped to close the gap to 2-1, but Falck took the Wildcat down again to pull ahead 4-1.
Precin registered his escape early in the second to close to 4-2, but could not even the score and Iowa took the 5-2 decision to make the team score 8-3 heading into the 133 lbs. match.
Eric Metzler (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) went up against Mario Galanakis at 133 lbs. The pair have split their previous two contests this season. The Hawkeye scored first with a takedown in the opening minute and kept the score 2-0 heading into the second.
Metzler started up in the second, but the 14th-ranked Galanakis scored an escape and a quick takedown to pull ahead 5-0. Metzler got his point with an escape early in the third to close to 5-1, but with the riding time, the Hawkeye took the 6-1 decision to cut NU's lead to 8-6.
James Kohlberg (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows), wrestling in the place of the injured Lang, took on eighth-ranked Alex Tsirtsis at 141 lbs. Tsirtsis notched an early takedown to go ahead 2-0. The Hawkeye scored three takedowns in the first and led 6-2 heading into the second.
Tsirtsis took a 15-4 major decision to give Iowa the 10-8 lead heading into the 149 lbs. match.
Marty Gould (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) took to the mat against Alex Grunder. The two wrestled even until the closing seconds when Grunder scored two points with a takedown. Gould evened the score with a two-point reversal in the final 30 seconds, but Grunder reversed 10 seconds later to go ahead 4-2.
The Hawkeye went ahead 5-2 with an escape in the first 10 seconds of the third and notched several takedowns to take a 12-4 major decision with the riding time advantage. Iowa led 14-8 with Dominic Marella (Roselle, Ill./Conant) up next for the 'Cats at 157 lbs.
Iowa's 13th-ranked Ryan Morningstar struck first with two points in the opening frame and stayed on top to take the 8-3 decision. Iowa led 17-8 with three matches remaining.
Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J./Blair Academy) surrendered five quick points to Iowa's third-ranked Mark Perry at 165 lbs., but action slowed down and the first period ended with the score 5-0.
A reversal in the second gave Perry a 7-0 advantage after two periods and the third-ranked Hawkeye cruised to a 10-0 major decision to pad Iowa's commanding lead to 21-8.
Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central), ranked 15th, took on Iowa's second-ranked Eric Luedke at 174 lbs. Luedke took Hayes down early, but an escape by the Wildcat made the score 2-1 going into the second.
Hayes evened the score with an escape in the opening 20 seconds of the second and the wrestlers stayed even going into the third.
Luedke escaped Hayes' grasp to start the third and inched ahead 3-2. The Hawkeye increased his lead to 5-2 with a takedown. The riding time advantage gave Luedke the 6-2 decision. With Iowa comfortably ahead 24-8, head coach Tom Brands forfeited the 184-pound match. Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) took his 101st win as a Wildcat, but Iowa took the dual, 24-14.
"We have wrestled these guys a few times now," head coach Tim Cysewski said. "We need to go back and work on some tactical things at the lower weight classes so we can beat them next time."
The Wildcats return to action at 7 p.m., Friday against Wisconsin at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
